For the second winter in a row, the JBJ Soul Foundation has offered a blanket donation campaign online. We have blankets for sale, donation, or you could buy one/donate one. Once the blankets are donated, they are shipped to the Foundation office where we contact our community partners involved in homeless outreach programs to see who is in need of extra blankets for those they serve. This winter, thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to send blankets to the outreach programs of three of our partners: Project H.O.M.E.’s “Hub of Hope”, Joseph’s House, and Covenant House’s new outreach program in Camden, NJ.
SparkAction and Youth Leadership Institute Launch Social Media Competition for Youth-Led Solutions to Connect More Young People to Jobs and Economic Opportunity
April 12, 2012– Musician and member of the youth-focused White House Council for Community Solutions Jon Bon Jovi today joined SparkAction and the Youth Leadership Institute to launch the SparkOpportunity Challenge, an innovative “crowdsourcing” competition for young people to share their ideas on how to create local jobs and opportunities for youth. Winners will receive prizes and tools to get their ideas off the ground.
Today Heart of Camden held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a home for Jorge Cartagena, a young boy who turns 10 this month was shot in the eye by a stray bullet last year. Jorge will be moving into his new home with his grandmother, Manuela Pintor, who is also a new homeowner. The celebration was held outside of Manuela and Jorge’s new home in the Waterfront South community of Camden, NJ.

Scott Gould, Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Shaun Donovan, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development on a media teleconference to announce a developer challenge called Project REACH (Real-time Electronic Access for Caregivers and the Homeless).
We have been sharing stories with you on our site regarding our Co-Chair of the Soul Foundation, Jon Bon Jovi, who has been serving on the White House Council for Community Solutions for the past year and a half. During that time frame much of his work at the Council has been parallel to our work at the Foundation and has been extremely helpful in informing our work.
Monday night, February 27th JBJ Soul Kitchen was transformed into a casual, yet elegant dining room with the accents of yellow calla lilies and candle light adorning the table settings. White linens and the bright yellow menus on every table set the mood for what was to become our first guest chef night.

On Wednesday, January 25th, the JBJ Soul Kitchen partnered with the Monmouth County Department of Human Services and Pilgrim Baptist Church in Red Bank to sponsor a Community Resource Day: Project Homeless Connect 2012.
The State of Homelessness in America 2012 examines homelessness between 2009 and 2011, a period of economic downturn in the nation. The report shows that despite the bad economy, homelessness decreased by 1 percent during this period. The decrease was likely due to a significant investment of federal resources to prevent homelessness and quickly re-house people who did become homeless.
